Berlin subscription FAQ
General information about the Berlin subscription
Why is the Berlin subscription being discontinued?
The state of Berlin has decided to make savings for the 2025 budget. This also affects the funds for the Berlin subscription. Therefore, the fare offer must now be discontinued; it will no longer be sold from December 11, 2024.
I have a Berlin subscription. What happens next?
The Berlin subscription will be discontinued as a fare product and removed from the VBB fare because it will no longer be financed by the state of Berlin.
We offer you the option of switching to the Deutschlandticket. Unlike your previous Berlin travelcard, the Deutschlandticket is valid throughout Germany and can be cancelled at any time on a monthly basis.
What is the difference between the Berlin subscription and the Deutschlandticket?
The Berlin subscription is valid for at least 12 months and is only valid in the Berlin AB area. The Deutschlandticket, on the other hand, is valid throughout Germany and can be cancelled monthly - even in the first year. With both tickets you can use all public transport within Berlin and children under the age of 6 can travel free of charge.
Can I pause my Berlin subscription for a month or longer?
You cannot pause your Berlin subscription. The minimum term is always 12 months.
What do I do if I have not yet received my Berlin subscription?
If you still have a chip card from an old Deutschlandticket BVG subscription and are registered with an account with us, you will not receive a new chip card. Your new Berlin subscription will be deposited there by us and will be valid during inspections.
What can I do if I lose my ticket?
If you lose your Berlin subscription chip card (fahrCard), please report your loss to one of our customer centres immediately. A new fahrCard will be issued and the old one cancelled. There is a charge of €10 for the replacement.
Notes on switching to the Deutschlandticket
What happens now with the existing Berlin subscription contracts?
Changeover to the Deutschlandticket:
Customers who currently have a Berlin subscription can continue to use public transport in Berlin until the end of their minimum contract term. They will receive a change offer from the transport company in the next few weeks and then a Deutschlandticket, which will be valid from 1 March 2025. Once the ticket has been sent to you, you will also be able to use local public transport services in other federal states.
The difference between the price of the Berlin subscription (€29 per month) and the Deutschlandticket (currently €58 per month) will be credited to customers each month by the state of Berlin via the transport companies until the end of their minimum contract period.
How do I switch from a chip card to a mobile phone ticket and vice versa?
If you selected the chip card when you ordered your new Berlin subscription and would like to switch to a mobile phone ticket during the 12-month contract period, you can easily do this via Abo Online. Please note that the online media change is temporarily not possible. It is not possible to switch from a mobile phone ticket to a chip card during the current contract period.
When can I start using the Deutschlandticket?
The new travel entitlements will apply from 1 March 2025.
Travel authorisation via chip card:
Delivery of the chip cards will begin in January 2025.
Travel authorisation via mobile phone ticket:
The Deutschlandticket will be displayed in the app in good time in the usual way.
What do Berlin subscription customers have to do now?
If customers agree to the change, nothing further needs to be done. Once they receive their new ticket, they can even use local transport throughout Germany.
If customers wish to cancel their travelcard altogether instead, they can agree to the cancellation of their travelcard. The contract will then be cancelled without replacement, the original commitment to the minimum contract term of 12 months will no longer apply and no further costs will be incurred.
Notes on the discontinuation of the contract
I don't want to switch to the Deutschlandticket. What now?
If customers do not agree to the switch to the Deutschlandticket and credit, they can agree to the discontinuation of their season ticket instead. This declaration must be received by BVG by 15 January 2025 at the latest. The following form can be used for quick and easy discontinuation.
Transferability and who/what you can take with you
Can the Berlin subscription be used by someone other than myself?
No, the Berlin subscription is personalised and can only be used by the ticket holder. It’s not transferable to other persons.
Can I take other people, a dog, or a bicycle with the Berlin subscription?
You cannot take bicycles with you, but you can take a dog; children under the age of 6 are free of charge in the AB fare zone.
