Means of transportation and tariff zones

What public transportation is available?
- Bus: Ideal for districts without a direct subway connection.
- Tram (Streetcar): Particularly widespread in the east of Berlin.
- U-Bahn (Subway): The fastest connection in the city, mostly underground, but also above ground in some places.
- Ferry: 6 ferry lines that take you safely across the water to your destination.
- S-Bahn: Operated by Deutsche Bahn, it supplements the BVG network and connects Berlin with the surrounding area, among other things.
Where can I rent additional means of transportation?
With the BVG Jelbi-App on your smartphone, you can easily rent various means of transportation from third-party providers yourself:
- Cars, cabs, e-scooters, bicycles and e-mopeds
What tariff zones are there in Berlin?
Berlin has a standardized fare system for local public transport (ÖPNV). This system comprises various tariff zones that are staggered according to distance. The city is divided into three tariff zones:
- Tariff zone A: Berlin city center up to and including the S-Bahn ring
- Tariff zone B: Outside the S-Bahn ring up to the city limits
- Tariff zone C: Berlin surroundings (approx. 15 km around the state of Berlin) including the city of Potsdam and BER airport

Basically, you can use all BVG transportation and the S-Bahn with your ticket. When buying a ticket, you have to choose between three different types of ticket:
- AB: Within Berlin (e.g. Alexanderplatz, Kurfürstendamm)
- BC: Berlin outskirts & surrounding area (e.g. Potsdam)
- ABC: Entire area incl. BER airport

On the BVG website, you can quickly and easily find the best connections, view maps and adjust various settings for walking routes or transfers.
2. With the BVG Fahrinfo-App or the BVG Jelbi-App:
Download the app from your app store onto your smartphone. The apps show you the best routes, current departure times and alternative connections in real time.
What tips should be followed when riding?
- Let people get off before you get on yourself.
- Get on and off the bus quickly to avoid delays.
- Do not stand next to the bus driver or on the yellow area in front of the bus doors. These must remain free for the doors to open and close.
- The subway runs continuously at weekends. During the week, there are night buses marked “N” that replace subway trains that are not running.
- Avoid rush hours (7-9am & 4-6pm) for a more pleasant journey.
