Here you will find answers to the most important questions about using public transport in Berlin.

How does public transportation work in Berlin?

Berlin has a well-developed public transportation network consisting of S-Bahn, U-Bahn, Tram, bus and ferry. One ticket is valid for all means of transport within the selected fare zone.

What public transportation is available?

The following public transportation is available in Berlin:

  • S-Bahn

Can I rent additional means of transportation?

Yes, with the BVG Jelbi-App you can easily rent various means of transport from third-party providers yourself. These include:

What is the difference between the U-Bahn and the S-Bahn?

The U-Bahn mostly runs underground and covers the city area. The S-Bahn belongs to Deutsche Bahn, runs mainly above ground and also connects the surrounding area with the city.

How are the tariff zones in Berlin divided up?

Berlin is divided into three fare zones:

  • A: City center (including S-Bahn ring)
  • B: City outskirts up to the city limits
  • C: Berlin suburbs (including Potsdam and BER airport)
Where can I search for connections?

You can find connections on our homepage and with the connection search. You can alternatively download either the BVG Fahrinfo-App or the BVG Jelbi-App to your smartphone and find connections there.

Is there night transportation in Berlin?

Yes, the U-Bahn runs continuously at weekends. During the week, night buses with the license plate “N” take over the U-Bahn service. Download the map for the night network in the downloads.

What rules should I follow when riding?

You should keep this in mind:

  • Get off first, then get on
  • Get in quickly to avoid delays
  • Do not stand in the door area to facilitate boarding and alighting
  • Avoid peak times (7-9am & 4-6pm) if possible

Where can I buy tickets?

You can get tickets:

Do I have to validate my ticket before starting my trip?

Yes, paper tickets must be stamped at the yellow or red validators (boxes). Digital tickets must be activated in the app before the journey begins, if not already done at the time of purchase.

Which tickets are particularly recommenden for tourits?

Depending on the length of your stay and how often you use public transport, we recommend the following tickets for tourists:

  • Single ticket: For shorter visits or spontaneous trips.
  • 4-trip ticket: Includes 4 single tickets at a reduced price.
  • 24-hour ticket: Any number of journeys within 24 hours.
  • 7-day ticket: Perfect for longer stays, unlimited travel for 7 days.
  • BerlinWelcomeCard: Combines a public transport ticket with discounts for sightseeing. Available for 48 hours to 6 days.
  • CityTourCard: Combines a BVG ticket for local public transport with discounts on numerous sights and attractions in Berlin. Available for 48 hours to 6 days.
Is one ticket valid for all means of public transport in Berlin?

Yes, with one ticket you can use the S-Bahn, U-Bahn, Tram, bus and even ferries.

Are there special tickets for groups or families?

Yes, the 24-hour small group ticket is worthwhile if up to 5 people are traveling together.

Are there discounts for children or senior citizens?

Children under the age of 6 travel free of charge. Reduced tickets are available for children aged between 6 and 14.

What conditions of carriage apply for dogs, children, luggage and bicycles?
  • Dogs: Dogs generally require a discounted ticket. Some tickets include one dog free of charge. Always check our ticket overview first.
  • Children: Children under 6 years travel free of charge, from 6 to 14 years the reduced fare applies.
  • Luggage: Hand luggage, baby carriages, wheelchairs and other orthopaedic aids such as rollators can be carried free of charge.
  • Bicycles: Bicycles are allowed on many means of transport, but an additional bicycle ticket is required.
Which tariff zones must my ticket include if I want to travel from BER Airport to the city center?

For journeys from BER Airport to the city center, you need a ticket for tariff zone ABC.

What happens if I am checked without a valid ticket?

If you have traveled without a ticket and have been checked, you will receive a form from the ticket inspectors.

Can I have my ticket exchanged or refunded?

No, purchased tickets are generally non-refundable. Returns are only possible in exceptional cases.

Finding connections

How do I find the fastest connection?

Use the connection search on the BVG website or the BVG-Apps (Fahrinfo-App or Jelbi-App) to find the best route.

Can I also filter a connection by specific means of transportation?

Yes, you can include or exclude means of transport when planning your route. A suitable connection with or without the respective means of transport will then be created for you.

Can I also use the connection search for barrier-free routes?

Yes, you can also search for accessible connections via the advanced settings.

Is support available for barrier-free travel?

Yes, BVG offers numerous barrier-free options:

  • The BVG Muva: If an elevator breaks down, you can use the Muva service.
  • Low-floor vehicles: Almost all buses and Trams have step-free access.
  • Elevators & ramps: Many U-Bahn and S-Bahn stations are equipped with elevators or ramps.
  • Real-time information: You can filter barrier-free connections in the BVG Fahrinfo-App and the BVG Jelbi-App.
Do I have to register to use the connection search?

No, the search works without registration.

Which BVG app is best for finding connections?

The BVG Fahrinfo-App and the BVG Jelbi-App are ideal for timetable information. Simply download them to your smartphone and start searching for connections.

Can I also use the connection search without an app on my smartphone?

Yes, you can use the connection search directly via the BVG website in your mobile browser.

Can I plan connections in advance?

Yes, you can adjust the desired date and time for departure or arrival in the connection search.

Are construction measures and traffic disruptions taken into account in the connection search?

Yes, current disruptions and roadworks are included in the route calculation in real time. You will always find some of the current construction measures and disruptions on the homepage or in full on the website for traffic news.

I arrive at BER airport, Hauptbahnhof or ZOB. How do I get to my destination from there?

From BER Airport, you can take the S-Bahn (S9, S45), the Airport Express (FEX) or various regional trains (RB, RE) into the city. BVG buses also depart from the terminal.

From Hauptbahnhof, you can plan your onward journey with the S-Bahn (S3, S5, S7, S9), regional or long-distance trains as well as U-Bahn trains, Trams and buses.

From the ZOB (Central Bus Station) you can reach your destination by U2 (Kaiserdamm), S-Bahn (Messe Nord/ICC, Ringbahn) or several bus lines.
